Examples of Work - Shannon Barnett

Wolves and Mirrors: an album of my compositions was released on 2021 on the Klaeng Records label and features myself on voice and trombone. Here are two selections:

MartyrWolves and Mirrors
00:00 / 05:36

Do you wanna die on this cross?

Do you wanna die on this cross?

Do you wanna die on this cross, nailed to the wood like a relic,

like a martyr from the past?

Wandering around like a lost soul, bleedin' from your heartbeat

Do you wanna die on this cross, nailed to the wood like a relic,

like a martyr from the past?

Wandering around like a lost soul, bleedin' from your heartbeat, readin' 'bout a drug cheat, wondering...is there anything left to mourn?

Sittin' in their golden towers

Sittin' in their golden towers

Sittin' in their golden towers, lookin' at the Earth, at the hole,

at the organs in the dirt

'Til the end of time they will tell you, it's in the name of science

Sittin' in their golden towers, lookin' at the Earth, at the hole, at the organs in the dirt,'til the end of time they will tell you, it's in the name of science, ordinant defiance, stuttering...j just another thing to mourn

Drivin' down another highway, listenin' to the world, to the roar,

to the man with all the facts

Oh what kind of world do we live in?

Conscience hypocritic, movement paralytic, lawyers parasitic Consequence horrific, needlessly acidic

Song for Caroline (and others)Wolves and Mirrors
00:00 / 05:50

You didn't need to tell me you're brilliant, I was always on your side

If it's about being cool, I've got no skin in the game

I'd rather be an ugly duckling with a heart

Than a peacock devoid of a soul

I didn't feel the need to advertise my goods, I'm an open book

Ask me anything, I've got no answers prepared

I'd rather take the scenic route than drive straight there

Show me your face

Lend me your ear

I'm not afraid of your light or your wounds

Show me your face

We all have our own

How long will you keep fighting alone?

I shouldn't need to show my credentials, I've paid my dues in full

Let's get one thing straight, we're on the same fucking team

And I won't let this indignation crush my dream

Show me your face

Lend me your ear

I'm not afraid of your light or your wounds

Show me your face

We all have our own

How long will you keep fighting alone?

Other Works and Works in Progress:

You Go Me On The CookieShannon Barnett

You Go Me On The Cookie (demo):

Lately I've been experimenting with text and humour...how far can one push the envelope when it comes to mixing traditional song forms with unusual words? You Go Me On The Cookie is a direct translation of a German phrase that means to annoy someone (similar to getting someone nerves). I've been working on making it sound like a 'normal' pop track with producer Jan Philipp.

Next Time: a song that I wrote with an expanding and contracting form, and a lot of trombones!

Taking Stock:

I recently wrote the words for this composition from singer songwriter Marek Johnson (David Helm).

"Once more you realise, things could worse

Your loved ones are still breathing

Sleeping just like stones

In time you'll see them

Laughing again

As memories of this darkness fade

At home again, singing

The songs of the travellers

And sharing tales of valour

Or the times that we walked 'til we lost our way

Under the bluest Southern sky

Fear not the future, treasure the past

And all the little detours, all the ebbs and flows

Here's to the sunrise, lift your cup

We're drinking to another day"

Skin Deep: part of an installation I made in a fitness studio, I wrote this song for the vocal group 'Of Cabbages and Kings'.
